Heike Brachlow: Colour Reflections

09/29/2018 By Sarah Traver

HEIKE BRACHLOW

COLOUR REFLECTIONS
October 4 – November 10, 2018
Opening: Thursday, October 4, 5-8PM

Traver Gallery is proud to present, Colour Reflections, by German-born artist Heike Brachlow. Known for her monumental, kinetic, kiln-cast glass works, Brachlow continues to explore how color, light, and material interact in this newest series of alluring abstract sculptures. The six möbius strip inspired forms included in this exhibition exemplify Brachlow’s innovative approach and her ability to alter the way we perceive form, space and medium.

Early in her artistic study, Brachlow discovered that adding controlled incremental amounts of metal oxides to the glass batch allowed her to create dynamic color shifting effects. This experimentation began during her Ph.D. research at the Royal College of Art in London. The results of those first experiments led her to produce her own glass colors, allowing her to thoughtfully create the unique light and color changing effects in her sculpture. Brachlow notes, “Most of my work reflects my attraction to movement, and part of the reason for this attraction is the idea of transformation. Polychromatic colours add a different type of transformation. While many transparent colours in solid glass vary to a degree in different types of ambient light, polychromatic colours change in a startling way, for example from purple to green. Working with these has promoted an interest in physics, and has completely changed my understanding of light.”

Born and raised in Munich, Germany, Heike Brachlow discovered glass while living in New Zealand where she worked as an apprentice in a small studio in Rotorua. She received her BA in 2004 from University of Wolverhampton and her MA and PhD from the Royal College of Art in London. Brachlow’s work can be found in the Glasmuseum Hentrich, The European Museum for Modern Glass, and the National Museums Scotland, in addition to other collections worldwide. She was a finalist for the international Glass Prize in 2012 and the Coburg Glass Prize in 2014.
