Traver Gallery is pleased to offer a new series of limited-edition bronzes by Preston Singletary and the NCN Collective. Created in collaboration with Raven Skyriver and Martin Janecký, the works bring the artists’ individual sculptural approaches together in bronze.

The bronzes are part of a special project supporting the NCN Collective, a group of glassmakers and Indigenous artists that includes Singletary, Skyriver, Janecký, Kelly O’Dell, Charles Parriott, and Nuu-chah-nulth artist Joe David.

Connected through their shared relationship with David, the artists have developed an extended creative community centered on mentorship, cultural exchange, and collaborative practice. NCN takes its name from the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation to which David belongs.

Sales from these limited editions will help fund the collective’s continued work, including new projects and travel between the Pacific Northwest and Prague.

Please contact us for pricing, edition details, and availability.

Traver Gallery is pleased to present Talk Show, a solo exhibition of new work by Seattle-based artist Lauren Grossman. In this series, Grossman continues her exploration of Judeo-Christian texts. This time, turning her attention to the conversational exchanges embedded within them, she re-examines and translates these archaic sources into the language of contemporary art.

In Talk Show, Grossman transforms speech into sculpture, extracting and dissecting conversations and monologues and rebuilding them as intricate hand-formed constructions. Works such as Hedge frame a brief exchange between God and Satan, while Genesis Object maps the sequential declarations of creation. Others use vertical or linear frameworks that visually reflect the pacing or structure of the original text she’s referencing. The resulting sculptures exist between language and architecture—dense, irregular, and grounded in the labor of their making.

Grossman’s process is deliberately physical. Each word and phrase is cut, carved, or etched by hand, methodically and physically transforming language into material. She shares, “I have no particular interest in the legibility of these texts in the finished work. I am, however, deeply invested in the process of hand-forming the text structures. This labor imparts a haptic quality to the work that cannot be achieved more efficiently. Editing to just the spoken bits of text gave me snarly clusters to organize in space—exercising my love of scaffolding”. Merging her practical hardware-store aesthetic with ephemeral, slippery spiritual ideas, Grossman invites us into an ambiguous, rich dialogue with her sculptures. Their awkward, uncertain beauty conveys earnest attention to material, meaning, and her endeavor to find contemporary poignancy in the oddness and curious beauty of old conventions.

Lauren Grossman graduated from the University of Washington ceramics program in 1983 and has since maintained an active studio practice in Seattle. She has presented over twenty solo exhibitions, and her work is held in the collections of Microsoft, Tacoma Art Museum, and the John Michael Kohler Art Center. Reviews of her work have appeared in Art in America, Sculpture, and Artweek. Grossman has received awards from the Flintridge and Groot Foundations, the Seattle Artists Award, and residencies at Pilchuck Glass School and Kohler Arts/Industry.

Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, November 1st, from 3:00–5:00 pm.

In Memory

Jane Rosen

1950-2025

Dear friends, it is with profound sadness that we share this news. Yesterday we lost one of our dearest friends and greatest inspirations. Renowned artist and educator Jane Rosen passed away surrounded by family and friends on April 18th, 2025 in Northern California. Born on April 6th, 1950, Jane was a bi-coastal artist known for her New York sense of humor, her fantastical but true stories, and for her insatiable love for friends, family and life. But most of all, for her love of nature and art in its purest study. A fiercely loyal person, she had decades of dedicated students, many who are now artists known in their own right.

Born and raised in New York, Jane spent years as an artist working and living in downtown Manhattan. She was deeply connected with nature, and based her art and her teaching on this connection. This deep link prompted her to relocate to a rural, coastal property in San Gregorio, California, allowing her to live in nature amongst a family of ravens, crows, foxes, a vulture, red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawks, and Acorn woodpeckers.

The 40-acre hill-top sanctuary that is her home will be a future place for artists to work and gather amongst the ancient redwoods and wild animals. As a great lover of the natural world, the legacy of her life’s work will live on in the future of this habitat. Jane was a master sculptor, deeply connected to both eastern and Renaissance traditions, and created unique glass and stone sculptures. Her proficiency with glass grew out of her teaching at Pilchuck and her partnership with master glass blower Ross Richmond.

Jane earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at New York University in 1972 and studied at the Art Students League until 1975. She studied drawing with Robert Beverly Hale, and was a student of Leonardo da Vinci throughout her life. Her credentials include professorships at U.C. Berkeley and U.C. Davis, Senior Faculty at the School of Visual Arts and Consulting Professor at Stanford University. Rosen received the National Endowment for the Arts Sculpture Award.

We were privileged to know Jane, work with her, and love her. She is survived by her brother Joe Rosen, sister Lety Pemberton, daughter Lila Tretikov, niece Samantha Royalty, nephew Max Rosen, grandson Max Tretikov and her close life-friends Edith and Eduardo Marin. Jane loved all her dogs – Mayo, Mei Mei, Mei Rose, Bookie and Rookie. She is predeceased by her mother, Norma Rosen, and her father, Mel Rosen, both of whom she loved dearly.

Jane was forever grateful to her galleries and the teams that supported her career, and considered them all part of her extended family. She was represented by Michael Steinberg at Bienvenu Steinberg & C. and Gaines and Macie at Sears Peyton Gallery in New York, New York; Chris at Winfield Gallery in Carmel, California; Gail and Shannon at Gail Severn Gallery in Sun Valley, Idaho; Maya and Katie at Maya Frodeman Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming; and Bill and Sarah at Traver Gallery, Seattle.

Her recent solo exhibition “Variegated Stones” closed on April 5, 2025 at Bienvenu Steinberg & C. in New York City and her work will be included in the upcoming exhibition “The Ark” at The Church in Sag Harbor, curated by Eric Fischl, opening June 21, 2025. This forthcoming international, historic exhibition epitomizes Jane’s spirit and her New York roots. Fischl shares, “The show is all about animals and sculpture. She is integral to it.”

A celebration of her life and her ethos will be announced at a later date. Donations can be made to Hearts for Paws Rescue of California in her memory.

Traver Gallery and Chihuly Garden and Glass are thrilled to present a groundbreaking exhibition featuring the latest works by Blown Away episode winners Gemma Hollister and Karen Willenbrink-Johnson, alongside series winner Morgan Peterson. This unique gallery exhibition emerged from a Chihuly-inspired episode of the celebrated glassblowing competition, Blown Away, judged by Michelle Bufano, Executive Director of Chihuly Garden and Glass. In this special team challenge, contestants crafted monumental, nature-themed glass sculptures, vying for a $10,000 prize and the opportunity to exhibit their works during Refract: The Seattle Glass Experience. which begins on Friday, October 17th, 2024. Click here to learn more about Refract.

Each of the three exhibiting artists bring a distinct vision and narrative to the medium of glass. Gemma Hollister’s pieces offer a critique of modern capitalism, using glass as a material for thought-provoking works such as Hitchbot in Paradise, a stained-glass tribute to the ill-fated robot that successfully hitchhiked across Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands with hopes of hitchhiking across the United States. Morgan Peterson will present a series of cameo portraits of Seattle-based drag queens highlighting ideals of feminine beauty, alongside works from her renowned Designer Drug series and new pieces inspired by her experience on Blown Away. Karen Willenbrink-Johnson’s brings her deep connection to nature to life through glass, with vibrant, dynamic sculptures that reflect the beauty and vitality of the natural world.

Traver Gallery and Chihuly Garden and Glass are honored to provide a platform for these artists, each of whom has made a significant impact on the contemporary glass art landscape. This exhibition not only celebrates their achievements on Blown Away but also their continued contributions to the field of glassmaking.

Traver Gallery is thrilled to have three gallery represented artists, Marita Dingus, Jeffry Mitchell and Cappy Thompson participating in Indie Folk: New Art and Sounds from the Pacific Northwest at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, Oregon. This exhibition features handmade work that seeks to blur the line between functionality and aesthetics. Artisanal woven baskets and tooled-wood objects mix with works without pretense, sometimes improvisational, and often employing found materials. For the artists—patchwork quilters and abstract painters alike—a rural and working-class ethos of generationally imparted knowledge is as foundational and valuable as academics and studio technique.

The exhibition features a multi-generational array of 17 notable artists from throughout the region including Marita Dingus, Warren Dykeman, Joe Feddersen, Blair Saxon-Hill, Sky Hopinka, Jeffry Mitchell and Cappy Thompson. A playlist of Indie Folk music selected by Portland’s Mississippi Records, a record label, shop, and venue will accompany the exhibition, filling the galleries with the sounds of the Pacific Northwest.

This August, Traver Gallery welcomes Maestro Lino Tagliapietra and his principal team members, Nancy Callan, Jen Elek, John Kiley, Dante Marioni, and Dave Walters, to the gallery for a special exhibition. We invite you to join us on Thursday, August 1st, from 5 to 8 p.m. as we gather to celebrate the opening of this extraordinary show.

Lino Tagliapietra: Maestro, Mentore showcases the work of legendary glass sculptor Lino Tagliapietra alongside works by the five team members who have worked most closely with him: Nancy Callan, Jen Elek, John Kiley, Dante Marioni, and Dave Walters. Exhibiting together for the first time, the works of these six immensely talented glass artists tell a story of artistic mentorship and mutual reverence.

For this unique exhibition, each of Lino’s principal team members, along with Bill Traver, Gallery Founder, and Jacopo Vecchiato, Lino’s Grandson and Executive Manager, were invited to hand-select an archived sculpture from Lino’s illustrious body of work that personally resonated with them. Lino, in turn, selected favorite works by each of the five artist team members. The selected works will be displayed together, with insights from the artists about their selections.

On the occasion of his 90th birthday, and coinciding with the release of the new Documentary “Sono Lino,” Maestro, Mentore illustrates precisely the profound and enduring legacy of Lino Tagliapietra. It celebrates the historical career of Lino Tagliapietra, his rich, collaborative relationships, and the profound personal connections within his glassblowing community. We are eager and honored to share these extraordinary works and the stories behind them with you, our friends, and collectors.

April Surgent at the Brunnier Art Museum
Tuesday, August 22 – Sunday, December 17, 2023

Press Release Courtesy of Iowa State University, University Museums

April Surgent works with an ancient technique that few contemporary glassmakers choose to attempt. Cameo engraving entails precise and painstaking work to carve through layers of various colors of glass to create unique low relief images. While cameo engraving is best known for its use by gem cutters with differed colored stones or shells, it is equally as dynamic when implemented on layers of subtly colored glass. It is a slow process that requires great skill and meticulous attention to detail. As a young artist Surgent first encountered engraving under the tutelage of the Czech master engraver Jiří Harcuba, which led to her focus on the use of cameo engraving as way to depict landscapes and environments in glass.

While nature is her source of inspiration, Surgent draws on her experiences with several science-funded research grants to inform how she chooses to represent the natural environment. Each research trip, from areas as diverse as Antarctica to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, has yielded a range of breathtaking imagery that later, in her studio, is recorded in glass. There is a great emphasis on using her engravings to document the present moment as the world is in the midst of a vastly accelerated loss of natural habitats and environmental impacts due to climate change. The depictions stand as a testament to the significant change that has already occurred, marking where the land, the sea, and animals are today; yet on this trajectory, the imaged landscape will no longer exist in just a few decades.

University Museums is honored to host an exhibition of April Surgent’s incredible cameo engraved glass along with two art installations created from human-made debris collected out of the ocean. The exhibition, along with a new commission created for University Museums’ permanent collection, all confront the environmental impact of climate change on the world. The art presents the perfect opportunity to direct further discussions on how glacial and sea changes continue to have a dramatic impact on Iowa. Through examining Surgent’s art the conversation must be had that we, and especially future generations, are and will be impacted by the devastating loss and accelerated environmental change occurring around the world.
